7 Helpful ESL Websites for Students and Teachers
In order to learn English, ESL students also need additional assistance. International students, fortunately, have access to a wealth of tools on free ESL websites to help them develop their language learning skills while studying abroad.
However, since there are so many choices available, this can be daunting for them at times. It’s difficult to know which websites would be the most useful for students who want to work on their English skills on their own.
As a result, I’ve compiled a list of a few ESL websites that I’ve found helpful and enjoyed incorporating into my classes, as well as recommending them to my students. I hope you find them useful as well!
1. BBC Learning English
This is a wonderful resource that is really user-friendly for students. It has a wide range of materials and tools for language learners of all ages.
With a variety of media such as videos, podcasts, quizzes, and written text, the content provided is very appealing and student-friendly.
The Grammar Gameshow, for example, features entertaining videos that are followed by quizzes that measure various aspects of grammar such as modal verbs and frequency adverbs.
Videos are also used in the News-Review segment to explain current events in the news and as reading comprehension exercises. A list of key terms and idioms is provided for each video. Each video is also briefly summarized, and there is a quiz.
The six-minute English segment includes videos of discussion subjects on current and trending topics. In addition to questions and vocabulary exercises, each video has a transcript that students can read at the same time if they wish.
Again, the topics chosen are very interesting and engaging for students, and they are available at three different levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
The segment on Lingohack is fantastic! Each segment focuses on a different set of vocabulary words associated with a subject or theme that appears in the various episodes. A fantastic way to expand your vocabulary!

2. Grammarly
Grammarly is an excellent tool for ESL students because it allows them to check their work for pronunciation, grammar, sentence form, and even proper spacing.
It’s simple to use, and you can check your writing and assignments by adding the Grammarly extension to your browser or uploading a document to the Grammarly web.
These two websites might be of interest to you if you’re looking for a general overview of English grammar or a more technical approach.
Englishgrammarsecrets and Wyzant both have a wealth of resources on all aspects of grammar rules and how to apply them while speaking and writing in English.
Additional practice exercises are given for topics such as the passive voice, irregular verbs, and parts of speech. The sidebar lists each subject, making it simple to find exactly what you’re looking for when you visit the site.
3. ESOL
ESOL courses is another excellent website that provides free lessons on a range of subjects, including vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing.
The lessons focused on songs and the lessons focusing on life in the United States are two parts that I especially enjoy.
The idea of the songs segment is truly inspiring. Students listen to a song from the list before completing different tasks or quizzes, such as a gap filler exercise or comprehension questions.
This is a great way for students to learn new words, develop their understanding, and listen to music all at once!
The segment titled “Life in the United States” is chock-full of fantastic tools! It has lessons on American history and current affairs during the year, as well as lessons on American holidays.
There are probably enough lessons here to keep you busy for many months. Students can complete these tasks at home with ease if they obey the directions.
4. Ello
Ello is a fascinating ESL website with over 2000 free ESL lessons available in both audio and video formats. Ello has many contributors from around the world, many of whom are language learners themselves, who contribute their services to the library of lessons.
It has a strong international bent and includes opportunities for beginners, intermediates, and advanced students.
Its interface and functionality are very student-friendly, and it’s simple to navigate to find the particular subject or field on which you want to concentrate.
Finally, you can find spoken skills useful if you are especially interested in websites that will help you improve your pronunciation. It provides students with free self-practice exercises to help them improve their pronunciation skills.
It also includes a plethora of self-study listening quizzes as well as additional quizzes for unique tests like the TOEFL.
I suggest spending some time looking at these websites to see which ones are the best choice for your international students. The best part is that your students will work on them alone, in pairs or in small groups, at home or in the classroom. Don’t miss out on these opportunities.

The four parts of this excellent ESL learning website are grammar, image dictionary, reading, and pronunciation. It has three levels, depending on the student’s skill. The following are some of the website’s highlights:
- The pronunciation segment focuses on English sounds that are more nuanced.
- It includes a segment where you can practice pronouncing verbs.
- There are several different grammar lessons with quizzes for various levels of learning.
- Conversation starters can be found in the reading section, and they can also be used for reading comprehension. Quizzes are also available, and students can listen to the readings.
- Photos are used in the picture dictionary to improve vocabulary, check grammar, and check pronunciation by clicking on the image to hear it read aloud.
6. Breaking News English
All of the content on Breaking News English is focused on current events and news stories from around the world. Each news article has 7 different reading levels, and each lesson has up to 26 pages of exercises and handouts to go along with it. Users can also take online quizzes and save stories as mp3 files as an added bonus.
7. FluentU
You’ll enjoy using FluentU in your classroom if you’re looking for new ways to teach English. FluentU transforms real-world videos into personalized language learning lessons, such as music videos, movie trailers, news, and inspiring talks.
It has a large selection of genuine English videos that English-speaking people watch on a regular basis. When you’re searching for songs for in-class events, there are a lot of great options there.
You’ll find music videos, film and theater musical numbers, kids’ singalongs, advertising jingles, and much more.
